How this differs from a central file host
A central host (Dropbox, Google Drive) stores the one authoritative copy on its own servers and serves it to every requester. Peer-to-peer file sharing instead has the file (or pieces of it) live directly on participants' own machines -- BitTorrent is the canonical example: a file is split into pieces, peers download different pieces from different other peers simultaneously, and a peer that has a piece can immediately start serving it to others (swarming), which is why popular torrents often download faster the more people are sharing them, the opposite of a central server under heavy load.
