Decentralized Messaging Tools

Peer-to-peer or federated messaging protocols without one company owning the whole network.

Doesn't connect to Decentralized.Host

No messaging feature exists in Decentralized.Host. Its hosts gossip membership (SWIM) inside a WireGuard mesh, which is infrastructure plumbing, not messaging for users.

Two different decentralization models

Federated messaging (Matrix, and email/XMPP before it) works like email at the protocol level: anyone can run their own server, servers talk to each other, and a user on one server can message a user on another -- no single company owns the whole network, but any given server operator still sees traffic passing through their own server. Fully peer-to-peer messaging (Signal's underlying protocol used peer-to-peer patterns in parts of its design; Briar goes further, routing over Tor or direct Bluetooth/Wi-Fi with no server at all) removes the server entirely, at real cost to reliability -- both parties typically need to be online simultaneously, or messages queue until they are.
