The moving parts
Owning a domain means three separable things: registration (paying a registrar to hold the name, renewed annually or it lapses), nameserver delegation (which DNS provider actually answers queries -- often different from the registrar), and the records themselves within that zone (A/CNAME for where traffic goes, CAA for which certificate authorities may issue TLS certs, MX for mail, TXT for verification/SPF/DKIM). Getting any one of these wrong independently breaks things in different ways -- a lapsed registration takes the domain down entirely; a wrong nameserver delegation makes your DNS provider's records irrelevant; a wrong record just breaks that one service.
