Why self-hosted email is unusually hard
Running your own SMTP server (Postfix, Exim) and IMAP server (Dovecot) is technically straightforward; the hard part is deliverability. Gmail, Outlook, and other major providers heavily filter mail from unfamiliar IPs, and a self-hosted server has none of the reputation a large provider has built up -- getting mail delivered (not silently dropped or spam-foldered) requires correct SPF, DKIM, and DMARC DNS records, a clean-reputation IP (many cloud/VPS IP ranges are pre-flagged), and reverse DNS matching your sending domain. Miss any of these and mail to major providers frequently just vanishes with no error.
