What gas optimization actually involves

Every EVM opcode a contract executes costs gas, so optimization means restructuring contract code to do the same job with fewer, cheaper operations -- packing multiple small values into one storage slot (storage writes are among the most expensive operations), avoiding redundant storage reads by caching in memory, choosing cheaper data types, and minimizing external calls. Tools like Foundry's gas snapshots or Hardhat's gas reporter measure exactly where a contract's gas cost concentrates so developers can target the worst offenders.
