Real performance work starts with measurement, not guessing: profile first (find where time or memory actually goes), form a specific hypothesis about the bottleneck, change exactly one thing, and measure again before trying the next idea -- changing several things at once makes it impossible to know which change mattered. The most common mistake is optimizing what's easy to change instead of what the profiler actually says is slow.
