What staking actually is
Proof-of-stake networks (Solana included, at the protocol level) have validators lock up (stake) tokens as collateral backing their participation in consensus -- in exchange, they earn a share of network inflation/fees, and can lose a portion of their stake (slashing) for provable misbehavior. A staking calculator estimates expected annual return given a network's current inflation rate, total staked supply, and a validator's commission -- useful because these numbers shift as more of a network's supply gets staked.
