What a token standard actually standardizes
A token standard is an interface contract: ERC-20 (Ethereum's fungible-token standard) guarantees any compliant token implements the same balanceOf/transfer/approve functions, so wallets and exchanges can support any ERC-20 token without custom integration work per token. ERC-721/1155 do the same for NFTs (unique, non-interchangeable tokens). Solana's SPL Token program plays the equivalent role on Solana -- one shared, audited program that any fungible or non-fungible token can be minted through, rather than every project deploying its own token logic from scratch.
